My friend, Jenn, came to pick me up at 7am, and we headed to my favorite long run grounds - White Rock Lake. If you read my last post, you know that Jenn has never run more than 6 miles.
And we headed out. The lake was crowded. Dallas Running Club, Team-in-Training, and Runwell all had numerous groups out training for fall half and full marathons. And there is never a shortage of bikes at the lake. The view is beautiful, and I think the crowd actually made it easier - probably cause there were plenty of things to distract from the run. Jenn was a natural, as I suspected.
Just after 5 miles, we took a brief walk while I made Jenn slide down a GU. I took my tri-berry GU, and it wasn't bad at all. Kind of pleasant. Jenn, however, choked down a chocolate outrage (my favorite), but couldn't stand the consistency. I guess it's an acquired thing. Fortunately there are a lot of options out there, but I can't tell you how much it helps to put a few extra calories on your stomach when you are in the middle of such a long run.
Around mile 7.5, I started to really feel tired. If Jenn was tired, she didn't say a word. At mile 8, we definitely started to feel it. With 0.15 to go, we decided to push it out fast... so we sped up - not a lot, but a decent bit. We pushed through the 9 we planned and decided to walk it off for another mile. The first 9 miles averaged about 11:15 pace. That last walking mile was sloooooooooooow at 17 minutes. Total of 10 miles. A great long run for me, and a first long run for Jenn. She looked ridiculously comfortable... you know, the kind of person who it just all comes to naturally. Yeah I know, I feel the same way all you other hard workers who had to struggle through long runs feel. But it was still awesome having someone with me on a long run... that's a rare thing, and it made the run so much easier.
When I got home, all I could think about was this amazing smoothie that I heard about from Katie of The New Good Ole Daze. And unlike 95% of the recipes that I vow to try but never bother to make, I actually went to the store yesterday and bought the ingredients. It's a chocolate cherry smoothie. Allow me to repeat that - Chocolate. Cherry. Really, do you need any further explanation? So I whipped it up (you can find the recipe on Katie's Blog HERE). Oh. My. Goodness. It was divine. Holy Smokin' Cow Bells. Yum.
I'm just thankful that all my injuries have been super minor. www.KnockonWood.com !!!
Happy running this weekend ya'll!!!
