A Sad Update...

Jogger, Lauren Huddleston, that I mentioned the other day on my blog in my Safety, Safety, Safety post was taken off life support last night (Sunday night).  Her funeral is Thursday.  You can read the current article HERE.  I think her brother stated it best, "We can talk all we want about physical changes that could be made to a trail or area that those people share. But there will never be a substitute for somebody's best judgment and awareness of safety issues."  Be safe out there, folks!

That is so very sad. My prayers are with her family tonight. I can only imagine how tough it is for them right now.

This is a tragedy, but when I first read your post I told to Karl: I bet she turned without looking, because I can't see it any other way how a bike/runner crash could cause serious injuries.

And now reading the article that's exactly what she did. It goes to show that runners should ALWAYS look before turning and coming to a sudden stop.

Being a runner who is also a biker (well before I ever laced up my first running shoes), I'm always aware of it. You have NO idea how many close calls I had with runners, even with the "on the left" or a bell warning -- if you're wearing headphones (which the majority of runners/walkers on the trails do), we can warn the hell out of you and it won't matter.

Usually the biker is the one sustaining serious injuries, this time was the other way around, which is why there's so much talk about it.

Treat the trails like you treat the road when driving, and these accidents can be prevented.
