What Do I Do?

Alright, fun and fantastic blog friends...

Here's the info...
- I am 5 weeks out from my first marathon and at least need some sort of long run this weekend.
- I am supposed to run a half marathon this Saturday.
- I am completely trained and capable of doing a half - and this one is supposed to be flat and fast.
- I am sick... I've had a sinus infection the last two days, and my planned 10 and 9 mile runs didn't happen at all.
- I am not supposed to run tomorrow, but instead supposed to "rest" for my half marathon.
- I am going to my inlaws for my husband's birthday on Saturday, so if I don't run the half marathon in their town, I probably won't get a run in at all.

Do I run tomorrow?  See how the legs feel?  I'm still icky, but definitely improving.  My head is just very congested.  If I run tomorrow, how far?  6 miles?  9 miles?  I don't question if I could do back-to-back mileage, but it might make my time Saturday slower.  Do I run in the race Saturday?  I can't imagine missing a weekend run this close to the marathon... I've only got 2 more long runs after this one before taper.  I honestly think I can push through it...

Alright... shout out and tell me what you think!

I think you should rest until Saturday, then run the half as an easy training run. No pressure.

I completely agree with Kim!

I think that running when you're sick is a good way to get injured. Your body's resources are busy fighting an infection.

You're ready for your big run in 5 weeks. A missed training run isn't going to matter. However, you might get really sick if you refuse to rest and recover. That'll hurt you in the big race.

Rest.

Rest, but run the race on Saturday. Take it easy if need be (don't worry about time, heck, remove your timing chip if that's the only way you can NOT worry about time). You got your 20 miler in, you're ready for the marathon. Now you have to run smart, and listen to your body (nothing wrong with skipping runs!). Not letting your body recover will hurt you more in the long run. (No pun intended! I swear!)

I vote for rest also... missing a week of running is not going to hurt you at this point in the game. your body knows how to do it and the getting sick might be a way of your body telling you to take it down a notch. You will be ok!!! BTW - I think my plan for DRC is to use it as an easy training run at this point. Might run it at an 11 but I don't really want to push it much more than that. I will get my PR later on... not willing to risk anything with the big one right around the corner!!! You are still more than welcome to start with me or stay the whole time, I just don't want to hold you back!!! I have run those hills a million times now too, so I know what's coming!!

I think I can't give any advice at all. This is all, sadly, over my head at this point. After I cross that virgin 1/2 marathon territory then maybe I'll feel a tad more qualified.

Get to feeling better soon!!

Don't run unless you'll run, not race, the half marathon slow (and I personally wouldn't be able to resist racing it!). If you're worried about your time on Saturday, take tomorrow off. How many miles should you do tomorrow? I like seven! Good luck this weekend!!!! How often do you race?

P.S. - I think you're five weeks out from your first marathon, not your first half marathon. :)

I just read over the comments and want to add that I think you should run seven miles the day before your race (as you were considering) because it's good to practice going fast on tired legs. :)

Christina - OH DEAR... I can't believe I said first half marathon instead of first marathon. Clear notice that my head is in the clouds.

I am feeling reasonably better though... still congested, but fever is gone.

Sherry - I was thinking the same thing about the DRC half, so I'm in!!!

Hold until Saturday...

I would go out for a short 3-4 tomorrow just to shake out the legs and see how you feel after being sick...then go for the half. I would say take it as an easy training run but there is no way I would be able to not 'race' it!! Good luck. You are almost there.

I agree with Julie. I have a feeling you will beat yourself up if you don't run - it will nag, nag, nag you. I say easy run today and easy 1/2 marathon tomorrow (as long as doing the 1/2 does not give you a stress migraine on top of the sinus migraine b/c you are rushing to get to a bday party afterwards). Feel better!
