I love Diet Coke. I drink about 4 of them a day. About a week ago, I ran out, and decided not to buy any more. I need to be drinking water. I am allowing myself to drink one IF I'm out to eat, but that's pretty rare. I do not drink coffee. I have no caffeine. I feel like a withdrawal train wreck. Perhaps 3 weeks prior to marathon #1 was not the best time to make this change, you think? But surely it'll help me be more properly hydrated. Right? Tell me that I've done the right thing.
Do you know how hard it is to insert that picture??? I would choose a Diet Coke over a cookie right now, and cookies are one of my favorite things.

Weening yourself off diet Coke is one of the best health decisions you could make. Yes, you are absolutely doing the right thing. Hang in there - soon you won't miss it at all.
And, wow, only three weeks left?! That's amazing.
You're doing a wonderful thing for yourself!
Any interest in tea? You could get some caffeine that way so you don't feel so wrecked but still be drinking something good for you.
HAA!! that is a hard thing you are doing right now!! not sure I could go cold turkey. On the other hand, you will be nice and hydrated and ready to go for your marathon!! You did the right thing! :)
SO WEIRD! I very rarely drink Diet Coke but I had the oddest craving today, so I venture to get one and OF COURSE, the vending machine is broken so naturally I wanted it like a thousand times more!
I use to drink a LOT of diet pop, mostly diet pepsi and when I stopped I felt like death. I switched to green tea, it's been my saving grace :)
okay so i think that you're not doing the right thing hahahah. is that not what i'm supposed to say?! i drink d.c. with lime like it's the elixir of life. recently i've replaced it with coffee because coffee is made where i work and it saves me $$. i tried to go cold turkey (and was actually successful) a few years ago and it was awful. but only for like 3 days. after that you will be ready to hydrate and beast WR :)
I quit caffeine for 8 months a few years ago. The first few days are the worst. After a few weeks you'll be fine.
I think you did the right thing. Water is so much better for your body. Your body will thank you in the long run. However, I do think the timing wasn't the best.
I haven't had soda in a looooooong time. It was pretty hard at first but now I got used to it. And I started that way too. By not having it in my house. Then I trained myself to say WATER, when asked what I want to drink at a restaurant. Haha! Now, I don't miss it at all. Even if I have a one at a party, it's not like I'll go back to drinking it again. Wait, are we still talking about soda or alcohol? LOL!
But seriously...You can do it, Lesley! Hang in there!
Oh man - I am totally empathizing with you! In college I ran out of money so I cut Diet Pepsi out of my budget. I had no idea what was going on when I was in class with cold sweats and shaking and sick to my stomach. I was a complete wreck. Then my co-workers helped me realize it was just the caffeine withdrawal. They are a doozie! I'm currently trying to ween myself off of it again after over-doing it in Disney World. They let you have unlimited refills in the hotel, and of course I was loading up on caffeine.
Good luck!!! Heck this might be the hardest part of your whole marathon training process! ;)
Good luck - I love my coffee in the AM and I do enjoy an occasional diet coke --- this is a tough challenge but I am sure you're going to rise to the occasion!!
PS: thanks for the comment on the "role model" blog... it was so nice!
We don't drink soda at home. It's for eating out only. But I have to admit, an ice cold Diet Coke is my favorite post-long run drink.
Good luck to you! :)
I gave up diet sodas for 3 weeks - 21 days. It was awesome and I feel like it has helped me eat less sugar. I don't crave sugar as much. But I now drink soda a couple of times per week.
Good for you! Cutting out soda is awesome! Yea, the timing sucks, so don't feel bad about pushing it off until after your big race if it's too much of a struggle right now. Your focus should be on your race, not on soda. Good for you!!! :)
Good luck!! I don't drink Diet Coke, but I love coffee!! I am working on cutting back...but not quite ready to quit yet. :)
I'm sure it's a GREAT choice, but it's hard for me to give a positive testament. I drink 2 PEPSI's a day. oops Good for you!!!
Ugh I feel your pain! I used to LOVE LOVE LOVE Dr. Pepper! I stopped drinking it about 2 years ago and now, I can't stand the taste! It's way too sweet and just doesn't taste like it used to! Good luck!!! :0)
You are brave to quit caffeine! I have tried and I always go back to coffee. I love coffee. I have read recent studies that suggest that caffeine is not necessarily bad for runners. But, I think you definitely have to drink enough water too! Good luck!
YOU GOT THIS! I was a Diet Coke-head too, and it was tough habit to break but it's so much better for you. My trainer for "lost it" said that each can of soda slows your metabolism by something like 7%. I don't have the details handy but it was pretty surprising info.
Giving up Diet Coke will change your life!! TRUST ME!! I drink water like its my job and everything feels better because of it. I never get tired in the afternoon, my stomach feels 100% better all day. It is SO WORTH IT!!
I love diet coke....I limit myself to one (maybe two a day).....
The rest is water water water!
Good Luck.... I can't imagine the torture
I'm sure you are making the right decision. I am a diet soda freak, and I know I need to stop. I have been doing better about limiting my intake, but I just can't seem to let it go completely. I feel your pain.
Diet CHERRY Coke owns 42% of my heart.
Hi Lesley,
Have you tried Zevia? 100% Natural, Zero Calories, Made with Stevia?!?! Perhaps it can be your guilt free treat!
Let me know if you are interested!

So funny, I am trying to drop cokes right now too! Good luck resisting the urge to go and find one!
1 or 2 Coke Zeros a day, no more. I drink enough water that I don't worry about the sodium which is about the only thing in those.
My problem is that if it's in the house, I drink way too much of it and not enough water... period. I AM allowing myself to have one if I happen to be out and about.
Note to bro... do not hold me accountable to this while at dad's house during the holidays. You KNOW I will be stealing one from his fridge.
I don't drink soda anymore, but I drink a severe amount of coffee each day. My doctor suggested that I withdraw VERY gradually, not cold turkey.
P.S. I smiled at your message to your brother.
