Are you sick of me talking about GU yet? Well today is the last day to enter the GU Giveaway. I think in testing some new flavors, I'm still sold on the chocolate outrage being my favorite. Vanilla bean also still remains firmly in second place. But I'm definitely thinking about adding some Lemon Sublime and Mandarin Orange to my stash, surprisingly. I'm, personally, not a fan of the Chomps, but I know lots of people who are. I just don't like chewing while I'm running. That probably sounds silly, but I don't need anything else to focus on other than one foot in front of the other. I'm gonna try out the electrolyte GU Brew this weekend, and I'll let you know how that works out.
This morning was a 5am run with a running group. They've been established for awhile, and I've started tagging along on Tuesdays. Did I mention that they are all faster than me? Yeah, it's tough to keep up sometimes. I especially struggled today in the humidity. But the distance was 4 miles, so I figured I could push through (besides, if I lost the group, I didn't know my way back to my car - pretty sure that'd be a worse situation!). Today, I am going to accept that 4 is enough for the day. My legs are feeling a bit like Santa's tummy (i.e. a bowl full of jelly).

Another Day, Another Grind
Today I hit the dreadmill at the gym. As luck would have it, I had a meeting at the kids' school this morning and there was another lady there who intended to hit the treadmills at the same gym. Score! Another buddy for the gym. It is so much easier to run with someone next to me. So thanks Emily for the run. I started in thinking 6 miles was a good number. As I hit just over 5, right about when Emily was finished with her training (for her first half marathon!), another friend, Amie, showed up at the gym. Score 2. And since she was there, I just decided to keep going. Made it to about 7 and then decided to pull it back, and just walked another 2. So I got in a solid 7 mile run and a good 2 mile walk. Not bad for a Monday morning.
GU Review: This morning I grabbed Vanilla Orange Roctane GU (with 2x the caffeine). I took it before my run. It gave me great energy and yes, it tasted exactly like a dreamsicle. While I have some nostalgic memories of dreamsicles, it's not exactly my idea of a pre-workout taste. But if you love the dreamsicle, you'll love this one. It was the perfect boost, though.

On another note, I love to read lots of other blogs and see how other runners are progressing in their running. Some of them are just starting out and others are way way advanced. Recently a blogger I follow, Dorothy Beal, wrote up a great little article geared towards first-time marathoners. As a future first-time marathoner (December 5th!), I just really liked what she had to say. It really gels everything I learned in the half marathons I've done, and she keeps it simple and to the most important factors for first timers. Anyhow, go check it out HERE.

10 Miles and Chocolate Cherries
I had you at chocolate, didn't I? Well... I'll get to that in a minute. I woke up early (yawn!) and got ready for a run. Had my normal breakfast - water and a Special K Protein bar. Just enough calories to get me going in the morning without being too heavy on my stomach. I'm sure there are healthier options out there, but it is double chocolate, so really? C'mon.
My friend, Jenn, came to pick me up at 7am, and we headed to my favorite long run grounds - White Rock Lake. If you read my last post, you know that Jenn has never run more than 6 miles.
I took a pre-run GU - Jet Blackberry. I just noticed it said "2X Caffeine" on it. Score. I could use that caffeine. Flavor was good, but I probably still wouldn't pick it over my Chocolate Outrage or Vanilla Bean. It definitely helped top off my stomach. (In defense of Jet Blackberry, it is my brother's favorite... so I guess we all have our preferences!)
And we headed out. The lake was crowded. Dallas Running Club, Team-in-Training, and Runwell all had numerous groups out training for fall half and full marathons. And there is never a shortage of bikes at the lake. The view is beautiful, and I think the crowd actually made it easier - probably cause there were plenty of things to distract from the run. Jenn was a natural, as I suspected.
Just after 5 miles, we took a brief walk while I made Jenn slide down a GU. I took my tri-berry GU, and it wasn't bad at all. Kind of pleasant. Jenn, however, choked down a chocolate outrage (my favorite), but couldn't stand the consistency. I guess it's an acquired thing. Fortunately there are a lot of options out there, but I can't tell you how much it helps to put a few extra calories on your stomach when you are in the middle of such a long run.
Around mile 7.5, I started to really feel tired. If Jenn was tired, she didn't say a word. At mile 8, we definitely started to feel it. With 0.15 to go, we decided to push it out fast... so we sped up - not a lot, but a decent bit. We pushed through the 9 we planned and decided to walk it off for another mile. The first 9 miles averaged about 11:15 pace. That last walking mile was sloooooooooooow at 17 minutes. Total of 10 miles. A great long run for me, and a first long run for Jenn. She looked ridiculously comfortable... you know, the kind of person who it just all comes to naturally. Yeah I know, I feel the same way all you other hard workers who had to struggle through long runs feel. But it was still awesome having someone with me on a long run... that's a rare thing, and it made the run so much easier.
When I got home, all I could think about was this amazing smoothie that I heard about from Katie of The New Good Ole Daze. And unlike 95% of the recipes that I vow to try but never bother to make, I actually went to the store yesterday and bought the ingredients. It's a chocolate cherry smoothie. Allow me to repeat that - Chocolate. Cherry. Really, do you need any further explanation? So I whipped it up (you can find the recipe on Katie's Blog HERE). Oh. My. Goodness. It was divine. Holy Smokin' Cow Bells. Yum.
And it seems I can never finish a run without some minor issue... sometimes chaffing, sometimes bruised toenails, but today, I actually had blood on my toenail. Oh well... just a true mark that I'm a runner. I hope everyone just starting out knows that getting pedicures are pretty much a thing of the past. ;-)
I'm just thankful that all my injuries have been super minor. www.KnockonWood.com !!!
Happy running this weekend ya'll!!!

It's Friday!
Today was uneventful as far as running. I hosted a playgroup this morning and served a crazy dish:
Anyhow, that took up my morning, so the run got delayed... and then I put it off more... and more... and it was 4:30pm. I forced myself to get on the treadmill and planned for a quick 3 miles. After a mile in, my phone rang... I talked for a bit while still walking, hung up, and started to run again... for about two minutes and then the phone rang again, and I answered. So I just continued to walk (at 3.8mph) for the whole conversation. Hey, at least I was still burning calories, right? I got to 3.4 miles.
Looks appetizing, right? Consider it a carb-load. It's tortellini dyed blue with broccoli (seaweed) and carrots (starfish) and ham (dolphins). I put just a touch of dressing to coat and salt and pepper. Come on, you know this is exactly what you wanted to see on a running blog, right? This little dish was inspired by the awesome Shannon, who has her own fabulous blog - What's for Lunch at our House.

Is that a decimal place? I'm the one who will keep going until I get to an even mileage. BUT, I have a half marathon recently... so there was this lingering 0.1 in my log, and then the running group went 4.5 on Tuesday... so then I had a lingering 0.6. Sooooooooo, 3.4 was perfect. (Are you all laughing at how ridiculous I can be now???)
Tomorrow, a long run around White Rock Lake with a crazy crazy crazy (did I say crazy?) friend who signed up for her first half marathon that is only 30 days away. Again, did I say crazy? The good side is that she's a natural and she can do 5 with no issue at all... I totally think she can do it. But she's still crazy. We're gonna shoot for at least 9 tomorrow and see how it goes.

Today's GOOD Run and the Clickety Clicks in the Sidebar
Today I planned a 4 mile run with two friends - Jenn (who is not really a distance runner, but is a natural, and has been adding on mileage quite quickly) and Robin (who is training for a marathon, like me, but she's got more experince and is a lot faster!). We met at 5am. After weeks of hitting 105-109 degrees, it was amazing to hit a 73 deg morning. Robin was looking for an easy run and didn't mind my slow pace (or so she said ;-) ). Jenn was a good sport agreeing to get up so early and run with me. It was a great run. The temperature was fabulous, the company was good, and everything just seemed easy. Running outdoors hasn't felt this way in a long time. In fact, we felt so good that as we hit the end at 4 miles, we went ahead and tacked on another mile. I probably would've happily gone even further than the 5, but I was out of time! I had to get home to get the kiddies up for school. Giant confidence boost from that run today. I definitely needed that. After those super hot mid-summer runs, I questioned whether I'd ever get the mileage to make it through my marathon in December. Now I can truly feel ok about blaming the bad runs on the weather!
On another topic... you might notice some banners over on my right sidebar. I want to be completely open about these ads. Everything you see to the right is an affiliate link... meaning if about 1,000 people buy a new pair of running shorts through those links, I might be able to buy a new pack of GU to fuel my next run. But seriously, every company that you see over there was personally selected by me. You will not see any links that aren't related to running or outdoor activity, and I will not put links for products that I don't personally recommend. (The first link, Road Runner, is where I get the large majority of my running clothes and gear... and they run fabulous sales.) So if you need anything, or feel tempted to check out any of the fabulous companies over there... be sure to clickety click through the ads on this blogs and help keep me blogging.
And because I like to give back ;-) , don't forget to go enter my GU Giveaway. Entries are accepted through August 31st.

100 Days
My local MOMS Club has started up a 100 Day Fitness Challenge. We've decided to do it based on minutes exercised. It's all about encouraging us all to get out there and get moving. And I've gathered up some cool prizes for the ladies. Our challenge started yesterday. Ironicly, blogger Courtney started her own 100 day challenge on the exact same day. Her challenge just encourages us to set goals and challenge ourselves to meet them during the 100 day period. So here I am, double-challenged! Most people who know me, know I am goal-oriented, and always up for a challenge.
Since I'm double-challenged, today I double did it... At 5am, I met a running group near White Rock Lake. I have never run with a running group before, but I've always wanted to. It was a hard run in the heat and humidity (yes, even at 5am), but I was glad to be there. The invite came from a sweet lady named Pat. Pat has a special place with me because she was my pace leader at my very first half-marathon. Pace teams rock, as far as I'm concerned. Running with a group and having a leader to encourage and keep you at a consistent pace is a priceless thing at these long distances, especially for those of us not uber- experienced at this. But anyway, today's run was a nice 4 1/2 miles. Challenging due to the weather and the pace (most of the group runners keep a faster pace than I do), but very encouraging. And I'm glad I did it. I look forward to running with them again next week. (And no, the lake didn't look as beautiful as in that picture, but I thought posting a photo of a big black square wouldn't be very attractive.)
I spent a couple hours relaxing (after I got the kids ready for school, and lunches made for both kids and the husband). But then it was time to head to Bodyworks class at LA Fitness, which is taught by my friend and fellow runner, Elaine. As part of my challenge goals, I want to do at least one cross-training session a week... so I have committed to going to Elaine's class weekly. Elaine kicked my rear today. Squat, knee up, squat, kick, squat, glute squeeze, squat, side kick. Press up, bicep curl, dead lift. Ugh. Call it a day. But I did it... one step at a time. Thanks Elaine for the burn!
GU Review: I tried yet another flavor today... Lemon Sublime. I was a little apprehensive after not liking how strong the blueberry one was, but I was shocked. I love it! It kind of tastes like Gatorade... the original flourescent Gatorade (when I was a teen, I used to eat the powder straight out of the jar). It was yum, and gave me just enough energy to get through my morning run! Want to try it? Don't forget to go enter my GU Giveaway before August 31st!!!

GU Giveaway!
As most of you know, I am a believer in GU. It's a great energy gel that gives me that extra bit of energy I need on long runs. I generally use the vanilla or chocolate outrage (which, I think, tastes like brownie batter - YUM). But I've been sampling a lot of other flavors recently and reporting on them in other posts. I gave the mandarin orange a surprising thumbs up - I really didn't expect to like it. The blueberry-pomegranate ultra endurance GU got a thumbs down for flavor (I thought it was a bit too strong, but I'm sure others might like it) but a thumbs up for performance (I felt great during the run). I'll continue to review flavors throughout the next couple weeks.
Alright, I know all this talk about GU has you all itching for a giveaway... so here's your chance to get a sample of lots and lots of different flavors. This will take you through lots of runs! So without further ado, here is the loot you could win:

Today is a Big Day
Today was the first day of school!!! That means my oldest, Patrick, was headed to 3rd grade, and my little Lily was headed to her very first day of Kindergarten. This will be the first time I have two in school. (And, of course, Paige HAD to be in the photo.) I also was the nerdy mom and snapped this quick photo of Lily with her teacher as she walked into the classroom (our school has a drop-off line, so you stay in your car). I have about 20 minutes to finish this post before I have to hop in the car and pick them up so I can hear all about their day. Paige cannot wait to pick them up... she keeps telling me "Patrick all gone. Lily all gone."
After I dropped the big kids off, I headed straight to the gym (aren't you proud of me?). I'm taking advantage of my motivation while it's at a high. I planned to try to get in a longer dreadmill run (which is way easier at the gym than at home), so I brought a couple new GUs to keep me energized. I took the ultra endurance blueberry pomegranate before the run. I like blueberries and I like pomegranates, but I did not like the taste of this GU. I'm sure it's personal preference, but I just want a mild flavor to help me get it down quick. This one was a little too strong in flavor for me. But, I will say that I felt exceptionally good through the first 4 miles of my dreadmill run.
I guess Paige couldn't stand the fact that she was unable to interrupt my runs like her favorite pasttime at home, so she managed to trip and fall hitting her chin. Yes, you guessed it... in the exact same spot she got stitches almost 2 weeks ago. Surprisingly, it popped open and the blood squirted. Ewwww. So after 4 miles, I got pulled off the treadmills to take care of my little one. She was fine, it was just bleeding way more than a typical wound, and she was really sensitive in the area. She asked to leave, so I obliged. What's a mom to do??? I got her home and taped her up and applied antibiotic, and she was good to go.
Sooooooo... I pulled from deep within and hit the home treadmill for another 4 miles. And in typical fashion, it was interrupted by "powwy" runs and whatever else, but I got through it. I wanted 8-10 solid miles today, but I had to take what I could get. It may have been broken up, but at least I still put 8 miles on my legs, so I'm feeling good. Afterwards, I chugged down a Gatorade G Series. These things taste so good after a long run, but I just can't drink them otherwise. I don't know why. But boy oh boy is it refreshing after a good run.
(And for the record, I never did take the Jet Blackberry GU that I had planned on... I'll save it for another day...)
Oh, and since I shared with you my veggie co-op produce, this was the first thing I made with it. I should call this the "Kitchen Sink" salad, because I tend to put everything I can find in the house in it... but it turned out quite nice. I used carrots, red bell pepper, cherry tomatoes, chopped up pear, and some awesome smoked chicken pieces (thank you hubby!)... topped with a light red wine vinagrette. Yummy!

Get Your Veggies On
Admittedly, I have never been the best at getting enough veggies into my diet. I know I need them. I know how good they are for me, but it just doesn't happen. The biggest contributor to solving my veggie problem has been to join a co-op. There are 12 members and every other week, 2 of us hit the Dallas Farmer's Market wholesale section and buy up some crates of freshness and separate it into 12 baskets. Each basket is only $15. Today was my turn to shop, and I was accompanied by my new co-op partner, Jenn (really, is there anything better than getting up at 5:30am to go veggie shopping with a great friend? ok, maybe a few things).
So here is our loot from today:
And just because when I was taking a photo of the veggies, Paige said "Take picture of Paige", you are left with this little gem (although it has occured to me that I better get a photo of my other two kiddos lest everyone think Paige is my only one!!!)...
Tomorrow, back to your regularly scheduled running program.
So here is our loot from today:
Doesn't that look completely yummylicious? Green leaf lettuce, green beans, yams, squash, zucchini, corn, pears, white peaches, mango, jalapenos, cherry tomatoes, sweet bell peppers, and grapes. Score. Not only is it a steal for $15, but it forces me to make lots of fresh veggies. I absolutely hate waste, so I'm pretty good about finding ways to try to consume every morsel before it goes bad. It's been quite a blessing to be surrounded by this fresh, affordable produce. It's certainly better than living off frozen veggies everyday (not that I don't still eat my share of frozen ones).

Today's Wog on the Dreadmill
Yes, I said wog. The affectionate term coined by my friend, Dina, for part walk/part jog.
Today was the day I *had* to get up and run. If I take more than 2 or 3 days off, my motivation plummets... But I decided today would just be an easy day on the dreadmill at home. Let me introduce you to my trusty dreadmill. She's old, she's cranky, she never goes the speed she says she does, but it works, and it saves me on days I can't get outside or to the gym. And it's got two major upgrades. Up top, we have attached one of those little DVD players that are meant to go on the back of a headrest in a car. As you can see, the plain white wall isn't exactly entertaining. Home is the only time I run that I use any form of entertainment besides people watching. And then the other little upgrade is there on the bottom in yellow - a high velocity fan... ahhhh... it's like a fresh fall breeze!
Right as I was ready to get on my shoes and get going, I see this:
You're cute, Paige, but it's mommy's turn.
I'm a little low on energy, so I did something out of my norm, and had a pre-run GU... something I typically only use on longer runs. I had a mandarin orange one that I received as a sample (do you feeeeeeeel a giveaway coming up??? you should... just give me a couple weeks). Shockingly, I liked it. The flavor was a lot more mild than I expected, and I didn't need as much water as I normally do to wash it down. It was light and refreshing, and once it kicked in, it did it's job of a shot of energy.
The goal for today was 4 miles with a slow jog at the start and finish and a few sprints in the middle. But due to my low energy, after the sprints, I took walk breaks instead of jog breaks. But even those were interrupted. Twice, I was interrupted with "I need to go powwy" by the same little cutie that tried on my shoes. And then interrupted again by my girls telling me that there's a lady at the door who wants to give me her card. Fabulous! Exactly why running at home is not a great idea in my house. Especially when my 2 and 5 year old are opening the front door for total strangers. No mommy award for me today. But I finished out the 4 slow miles, regardless.
I'm ready to refocus my training and get a bit more serious. I put in the miles, but I don't do speedwork, generally. I also don't cross-train. All the little birds have been chirping in my ears, and I'm going to do my best to buckle down and get hard core! We'll see how it goes...
Hmmmm... and as I get my shoes back, I see this:
Dream Races
Do you have a list of races you'd like to do "someday"? Like visions of Sugar Plum fairies dancing in your head? I know most runners dream of Boston, but I'm under no crazy delusions that I'll ever qualify for Boston. New York is surrounded by all sorts of hype, but I'm not sure that one excites me that much, either.
I think the races I would most like to do are...
Marine Corps Marathon - My father was a Marine for 26 years. I trained for the Marines at Officer Candidate School (even though I subsequently turned down my commission). And I grew up just south of D.C. For me, this marathon would be sentimental. I hope to do it someday in the near future. But first I have to know I can complete a marathon. And second, I have to commit to travelling there mid-school year, while I have 3 small children - not the easiest thing to plan.
Maui Marathon - Really, does this one need explanation? It's supposed to be much smaller than the Honolulu Marathon with only 1450 entries. And let me just past this little excerpt from Runner's World to show you why it tempts me... "This beautiful point-to-point, mostly flat course offers the best of Hawaii. Marathon morning on Maui begins in Kahului with a traditional Hawaiian blessing, hula dancers, and musicians blowing conch shells in the prerace darkness. The race starts at 5:30 a.m. to take advantage of cooler temperatures (in the 60s). Tiki torches light the way for the first half-mile. At mile six you see the sun rise over the 10,000-foot volcano Mount Haleakala. After mile eight you run alongside the crashing waves of the Maui surf for much of the race. Off the coast you can see Molokini, an extinct volcano crater. As you run northwest, the West Maui Mountains block the sun. Enjoy the cool ocean breezes and the sun at your back, and take advantage of the plentiful fluid stations with iced sponges—by 10 a.m. temps can be in the 80s. On the flat section between miles 14 and 19, you've got great views of two other Hawaiian islands, Lanai and Molokai, and the chance for some cooling crosswinds. You arrive in the historic whaling village of Lahaina before finishing at the Kaanapali Resort Area, where you are greeted with a lei and a medallion as you cross the finish line." (Yes, the photo to the left is part of the course... sweet, eh?)
Disney Princess Half Marathon - Again, this really shouldn't take any explanation. It's Disney, and it's fun. And you know what? I'm registered!!! I can't wait. My family will be coming along, and we'll be enjoying a full week of Disney along with the festivities. It will be the first time my husband and kids have ever been to Disney. I haven't been since I was a very very young kid. I absolutely can't wait... but shhhhhhhhh, the kids don't know. They'll be getting their Disney tickets for Christmas!!!
So what are your dream races???

Racing Checklist
Every time I have a race, I have a set of things I do and things I bring for the race. So here's my personal run down...
A few days before I begin my hydration and health process. This sounds cheeseball... I mean, I should always stay hydrated and eat healthy, right? But I'm a realist, and know that isn't always the case. So a few days before, I raise the water intake A LOT. I try to cut out anything greasy or high fat. I up my carbs a bit. Nothing crazy... because I'm not quite that hardcore, though I sometimes wish I was.
The night before I plug in my Garmin watch so I can have a full charge in the morning. And I lay out everything I'll need the next morning:
- Race Bib with pins hung in each corner ready to attach
- Shoes with timing chip already attached
- Body Glide (if you don't know what this is... look it up... although I don't really need it for distances shorter than the half marathon)
- Running bra (guys, you can skip this one!)
- Shorts/pants
- Technical shirt
- Jacket to stay warm before the race, if needed (obviously NOT needed right now... geesh)
- Hat
- Socks
- Clif bar (chocolate chips and oats) and water bottle to eat/drink while I'm getting dressed
And I pack a bag... in my Nike gymsack, I usually put the following:
- Banana (or something else small to chomp before the race)
- Bottle of water
- Sunglasses
- Sunblock, if needed
- Chapstick
- iFitness belt (this thing ROCKS) with ID, credit card, medical insurance card, and a little cash
- Phone
- Gloves, if needed
- GU (at least one for every 5 miles in the race)
- Keys
- Directions for race day parking
The last thing I do is put a towel in the car so that my seats don't get all nasty post-race. Some people bring a change of clothes, but I rarely have the energy or desire to change.
Something I intend to add to my checklist is a small cooler with water and gatorade in case the supply at the finish line is depleted, which apparently does happen. Especially for slower runners or when there are different distances and the shorter distance runners will come in way before you. It shouldn't happen, but it does.

Hottest Half Race Report
The Hottest Half lived up to it's name. It was 89 degrees at the start of the race (at 7:30am), and somewhere around 97 degrees at the end of the race. The heat is brutal, and until you have run in it, it is impossible to understand just how much it can slow you down. The humidity was also ridiculously high.
This was my fourth half marathon, and I knew it would be my most challenging. I didn't set any real expectations for myself going in. I just wanted to finish - preferrably standing. I got there early and looked around the couple of booths that were there, and thoroughly enjoyed the mini-Jamba Juice that was being handed out. Yum.
I find a spot to sit and start lubing up with sunblock. I never wear sunblock. I despise sunblock. I don't like the way it makes my skin feel, and I hate the way it clogs pores and seems to limit sweating. But I knew the sun would be brutal, and I figured having to spend the next few days as a lobster might be just as unpleasant as the race. So I did it... then I went to turn my bag in to baggage check. After I turned my bag in, I felt naked... like I was missing something. No ID, no money, no water, nothing. And the feeling kept nagging me. I went ahead and used the porta potty despite not really needing to go since you don't want to get caught being late to the start due to being stuck in line. As I finished my wandering and decided it was time to go ahead and mush up with the pack heading towards the starting line, I realize GU... oh dear... all my GU was in my checked bag. Thank goodness baggage check was run by two extremely nice and understanding people who didn't mind digging out my bag again for me to get it. A half marathon in the heat, I knew I would need those calories.
The starting line was slightly confusing... there was a big set-up for the finish line (this was an out and back course), but the starting line was around the corner from the finish line. It wasn't really marked well, and you didn't really know you were starting until you noticed the blue timing pad under your shoes. The gun went off right on schedule. It was hot and humid, but I was feeling good. I kept my pace slow and steady and just let the hoards of people pass me. I was feeling pretty good and had already resolved that I was not going to over-push myself in this heat, and that I would walk when I needed to.
Just before the 2 mile mark was Libby Jones, who is an amazing support to fellow runners. Thank you Libby for standing out in the heat to support us.
Around mile 4 was a nice hill and I decided to speedwalk up it. I have pretty long legs, so my speedwalk up the hill still kept me at pace with the girl who was beside me still jogging. This was also about the time the sun decided to make it's appearance very well known and the temperature went up. The sun was right on us... burning. By the 3rd water stop, they were already out of water and only had Gatorade. I like Gatorade, but a girl needs water too. It was blazing. Many of us made stops at water fountains that are placed pretty frequently around the lake. The worst part, though, was all water and/or Gatorade we did have was hot... which really doesn't help cool your body's core temperature as much. Ugh. I finally hit the turn around and I felt a sigh of relief... thinking the rest is all just about getting back to where you parked!
I started to need to use the restroom, and I have never before stopped during a race at a porta potty, but clearly we weren't breaking any time records today, only temperature and sweat records. So I went ahead and stopped, and besides the trauma of trying to peel my sweat-soaked shorts off my sticky body, it went pretty quick and I was back on the course in no time.
It was about this time when I started to notice the stench of other runners, especially the guys. I'm sure I was no rose, either, but it was very distracting. Until, my attention was focused elsewhere... a lady with her race bib on, pushing a jogging stroller. Not that odd, as with many races at the lake, several push jogging strollers, they just tend to stay somewhat towards the back of the pack. But I was thinking it was mighty hot for the wee one, so I went to take a look at the little person. And right as I was about to explain away my staring by telling the lady how cute her child was, I noticed there was just a giant baby doll in the stroller. Strangest. Thing. Ever. I tried to explain it away. Perhaps she saw her husband, and the baby was hot and she handed the baby to her husband. But why wouldn't she leave the stroller too? And how could a baby have even fit in there with that big ol' doll? And if the baby did fit with that big ol' doll... wouldn't the kiddo have taken his/her doll out at the same time? These are questions to which I will never have answers, and I will remain forever curious of.
Back to the race... by mile 8, the sun was brutal, the lack of water along the course was unforgiveable, and I was defeated. I was so desperate for water that at one stop where they had run out of cups, I picked a used one up off the ground and had them fill it. At another stop where they were out, one guy actually lifted the cooler and we stood under it to drink the last drops out of the bottom. At this point, I knew there would be a lot of walking involved. I was starting to see person after person laid out on the side of the path due to heat. Police and ambulances were all too common. At this point, I resolved that finishing on my feet was better than a stretcher even if I had to walk the entire rest of the way. So that's about when I started half run/half walk... alternating as best I could. At mile, 11.5, I started up conversation with another lady, and we resolved to finish together (thank Trish, if you're out there somewhere). We walked most the way, but would take short runs in between. Then we walked to the final curve and pushed it in to the finish line. I have never, ever in my life been so happy to see a finish line!!! (It's nice loot, though, isn't it???)
And bonus surprise... my brother, sister-in-law, and two nephews were there to cheer me through. Unfortunately, I was in a complete daze of heat exhaustion and didn't make very good company.
But yet again, there was lack of water even at the finish... I managed to scrounge one very hot bottle of water. It was not enough, and I was at my breaking point, but I still walked back over to the finish to watch my good friend Elaine come through for her 7th half marathon.
It was by far my worst time for a half, but that's ok. Chalk it up to a learning experience that my body and this heat do not get along. And mark my words, if I ever run in the heat again, I WILL bring my own water bottle. This has happened for 3 races now, and I will no longer trust them to have sufficient water in these extreme heat situations. (In their defense, I think what happens is it's so hot, that the first runners through are taking 2 or 3 cups... 2 to drink, 1 to pour over their head... and by time us back-of-the-packers come through, it's all been depleted.)
Afterwards, I was too tired to even text those that were waiting to here from me, so I just took a photo of myself to post to facebook to prove I was still alive... although, I was barely hanging on. It was actually feeling quite pleasant under that tree, so I was pretty sure I wasn't moving for awhile.

After a few minutes of sitting there, a man promoting the Ft Worth Marathon came over to hand us some information. Halfway through his talking to us, I had a shooting pain in my shin. It started to cramp. I have never had a shin cramp, and I hope I never will again. It was agony. As luck would have it, the man that was talking to us about the Fort Worth Marathon was also a sports therapist and immediately knelt down and massaged my shin. Seriously, whoever you are, THANK YOU. And now I kind of have to sign up, don't I? The perk of that particular race is that they are unique in that they offer three distances - the half marathon, the full marathon, and a 20-miler. I know what you runners are thinking... a 20-miler??? Well, these guys are smart because their event is exactly 3 weeks prior to the White Rock Marathon, the biggest marathon in the metroplex. So what are runners who are training for White Rock doing 3 weeks prior? They are doing their 20 mile long run. Ah ha. Brilliant marketting at work here. And the loot is WAY cool. It's a belt buckle on a ribbon. I couldn't find a good photo of it online... but here's the best look I could find...
And that's pretty much a wrap for this race. Stick a fork in it... it's D-O-N-E.
And don't forget that it's your last chance to enter my CSN stores $40 giftcard giveaway. I will choose a winner at 10am central, Monday morning. So get on over there and post.

A Few Odds and Ends of the Day
I forgot to mention my main excitement for the day. I registered for RRCA Coacing Certification in Little Rock, Arkansas on January 15th and 16th. I'm not sure my future is "coach", but I love to help others start running, and I'd love to have the right knowledge to back that up (besides just what I read in Runner's World). Anyone want to come with me? I hate going to things like this alone, but I'm seriously looking forward to it.
I also got in 7 good miles on the dreadmill today. I am certain that my treadmill is not calibrated properly. For some reason I can run much faster on the gym treadmill (over 1mph difference in my capability at home versus the gym). Maybe I actually ran 8. I really need to look into getting this 10-15 year old treadmill calibrated. Anyone ever had that done before???
Lastly, I wanted to point you to a new blog I've been reading... Runner Dude. His BLOG is full of useful info for runners... I'm really enjoying it. It's like having Runner's World at your daily fingertips. So go check it out!

Now, onto more important things... like family, vacation, and COOLER temperatures, right? How about my 3 little animal lovers in front of a big black bear at the Wildlife Park.
This photo is being shared simply because it's cute. Period.
This is the lovely waterfall that I stopped to look at just before my car got hit on Day 1 of our time in Colorado. Fortunately, I got over my jitters and managed to return to the falls and take some more photos, and then even managed to get to the Wolf Creek pass area that I never got to the day before.

What was out our front door every morning:
And one of the favorite days for the kids was this awesome train ride through northern New Mexico.
Now that we're done with fun and pretty and remembering 60 degree weather... let's look at the weather forecast for my half marathon this Sunday. Oh yeah, looks lovely, doesn't it? You wish you were me, don't you? I have already started drinking water like crazy to make sure I'm hydrated, which unfortunately means I'm up twice a night to visit the porcelain genie. Fabulous.
BUT... I have plenty of reason to race well this Sunday. I am just over the moon excited about how many of my friends have taken up running and have committed to racing (including my BFF who just started on the treadmill yesterday and has already committed to do a 5k with me). I am feeling seriously energetic and inspired. I know the heat will take it out of me, but all I want is that finish line!

Preparing for the Hottest Half
As you all know, my motivation has been lower than the temperature in Antarctica. Between the car and the stitches and unpacking from our Colorado trip and a million other things, I am completely spent. But I put on a new pair of Nike Tempo running shorts. Seriously, I could live in these shorts, and I have a thing about NOT wearing shorts (I am just not a fan of my upper-legs - perhaps I should work on that). Side note: Unless you're a runway model, I highly suggest getting a size up in these shorts if you want to try them out... I try to have respect for the few people that are actually behind me when I run. ;-)I picked out my treadmill entertainment. Who doesn't love Netflix? Come on, you know you do. We don't have cable, so we adore Netflix. But this movie was a bad choice... "My One and Only". It's based on George Hamilton's childhood, and let me tell you, it didn't distract me from running AT ALL. I might as well have been watching paint dry. I didn't finish it yet, that will require another torturous run, but I'm pretty confident that it's not going to get any better.
At mile 2, I was interrupted by a scratching on my leg... Hmmmm... what's that... oh? You're supposed to take the tag off the shorts before you wear them???
At mile 3.5, I was reminded why I really dislike running at home when I was interrupted by "I need to go powwy." I finished off the 4 miles afterwards and called it a day. I hope to get in a lot more tomorrow.

I do have to keep my running legs on, because this Sunday, I have The Hottest Half on my schedule. You know you are all jealous of my running in 90-100 degree sweltering heat in Texas in mid-August (which is the hottest month here). I am considering doing a run-walk method to get through this. I usually try to run the whole time (except for when I get water, since I've learned that getting the water into your mouth instead of on your shirt is more important than a few seconds time). It should be fun! Wednesday, August 11, 2010

Texas Heat and Baby Stitches
Yes, you heard me right. Yet again, plans to run are thwarted by incidents that just make me as motivated as a snail crawling up a salty mountain in a snowstorm.
First of all... is there really any question that I'm back in Texas? Oh how I miss those 70 degree highs in Colorado. And, due to the wreck, I'm in a rental car for the next week or two. They gave me a Dodge Journey, which is actually pretty nice (despite the lack of legroom in the rear seats, but thankfully, my gang is still short).
The only problem - the car is BLACK... really? It should be illegal to drive a black vehicle in Texas. As if it isn't hot enough outside... no wonder this car probably didn't move from the lot and ended up at Hertz.

The only problem - the car is BLACK... really? It should be illegal to drive a black vehicle in Texas. As if it isn't hot enough outside... no wonder this car probably didn't move from the lot and ended up at Hertz. So I finally make it to naptime... my chance for motherly peace... and my opportunity to hit the treadmill at home since I really hate dragging all 3 to the gym, and they're too young to just leave at the house while I skip around the neighborhood. The girls were just not going to sleep... then a loud bang and ear-ringing screams from my youngest, Paige. I run in to find blood all over the rail of the bed... and guess what... yep, stitches!
Paige got 3 stitches in the chin. She didn't wimper or scream... just let a few silent tears stream out. They said she was the bravest 2-year-old they had ever seen. And even today, I'm trying to get her to lie down and watch Dora or something and she's wanting to jump off things and swing from bars. Cirque de Soleil will be calling soon.
So with a lack of workout to entertain you with today, I leave you with these snippets from the Runner's World article "Snack Smart" by Kelly Bastone:
Eating the right foods in between meals is key for any running situation.
Many people think snacks mean junk—and they probably do if they come from a cookie jar or candy bowl. But for runners, snacking is a valid nutrition strategy. It helps us fuel up for workouts, get a variety of nutrients, and spread calories evenly through the day. Snacks also sustain blood-sugar levels (which reduces cravings) and keep your metabolism high, warding off weight gain. "Without a snack to take the edge off, people eat faster, eat more, and choose higher-calorie foods because they're overly hungry," says Suzanne Farrell, R. D., a runner and spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association.
The key is to keep portions small—around 200 to 300 calories—and choose healthy, nutrient-dense foods, says Kelli Montgomery, a coach and nutrition consultant in Connecticut. By going for fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats, runners can get nutrients they may have missed at meals. But it's important to know what to choose—and when, since some foods offer runners the most benefit at particular times. Here's how to snack smart to get the fuel your body needs.
Prerun Snack Attack... To curb prerun hunger, 30 to 60 minutes before running eat high-carb, low-fiber foods that are easy to digest and provide fast energy. You can eat some protein and fat to steady your blood sugar during a long run, but include them sparingly, says Montgomery: Fats and protein break down slowly and, like fiber, can lead to an upset stomach midrun. Pick This Have a piece of fruit and pair it with cottage cheese. Other options: fig cookies; half a bagel with nut butter and jam; an energy bar; sports drink.
Postrun Snack Attack
Even if you eat a meal before running, you may be hungry afterward—especially if you ran long and hard and your muscles need fuel. Choose a more substantial snack combining a 4:1 ratio of carbs to protein. The mix speeds muscle recovery, especially if eaten right away since foods consumed within 30 minutes of your workout provide the maximum recovery benefit. Not hungry? "It's okay to skip a snack after shorter, easier runs," says Montgomery. If a tough workout leaves you feeling queasy, try chocolate milk—it provides that 4:1 ratio and helps you rehydrate but won't strain your stomach.
Pick This Save half of your turkey sandwich at lunch for later as a snack with juice. Try a fruit-and-yogurt smoothie.
Predinner Snack Attack
... To stave off hunger without tons of calories, go for fiber and protein—both are slowly digested and feel satisfying. Work in an extra serving of veggies, which are less appealing before or after a run because of their fiber content. Crave pretzels or carb-rich snacks? Measure out a portion: A 2008 study found that people who eat 100-calorie snack packages consume about 120 fewer calories a day than those who snack from a regular-size bag.
Pick This A cup of vegetable soup; salad with egg whites; hummus with carrots and celery; yogurt with berries and almonds
Bedtime Snack Attack
...Try to avoid overdoing sugary foods, which can cause a spike in blood sugar and interfere with sleep. But if you have a long run in the morning, you may need more calories before bed. Go for protein and high-fiber carbs (which top off energy stores while you sleep), or snack on high-fiber cereal: one study found that people who eat a serving of cereal 90 minutes after dinner consume fewer calories daily than those who don't have cereal.
Pick This Need a sweet? Try a portion-controlled dessert like a frozen yogurt pop. Have cereal and milk, instant oatmeal with walnuts, or low-fat cheese and crackers.
Stealth Health
They might seem like junk, but these five snacks are downright good for you.
Jerky - With seven grams of protein per serving, jerky is a healthy postrun snack—just make sure it has 480 milligrams of sodium or less per serving.
Popcorn - Four cups air-popped have only 125 calories and five grams of fiber. If you choose microwave varieties, go with 94 percent fat-free versions.
Pudding - It's a good source of calcium. Make your own with powdered mix, or buy premade low-fat snack cups (look for one that's vitamin D-fortified).
Dark Chocolate - High in antioxidants, dark chocolate is good for you—in moderation. Have an ounce, which is equal to six Special Dark Hershey's Kisses.
Chips and Salsa - High in vitamins and antioxidants, salsa contains just 70 calories per cup. Enjoy it with a single serving of baked, multigrain tortilla chips.

Colorado Vacation or NOT!
Monday, I had grand plans of a running expedition, but my mood was ruined when I not only witnessed an RV flip and go head on into the side of the mountain,
but then watched their towed vehicle unlatch and fling across the parking lot into the truck next to me, pushing the truck into my van. Vehicle damage is not what you want to deal with when you are 900 miles from home with 3 kids and without your husband. Fun times.
Fortunately, everyone involved is fine, and my car is driveable. I just have to pull a pseudo-Dukes of Hazzard move and crawl in from the passenger's side... which got old around the twentieth time.
I planned on getting a lot of running while on vacation, but I only got in 2 average runs (4 miles on Tuesday and 5 miles on Thursday). I was gasping for air the whole time. The altitude was really trying on my lungs. If you have a race at high altitude anywhere in your future, I suggest taking some steps to train for it. Yikes! I know dehydration and high heart rate are risks at higher altitude, so I took it easy and took walk breaks when I needed. I also carried a water bottle, despite the pleasant 60 degree air. I normally wouldn't carry a water bottle at the temperature and distance.
Looking for a clear head and some motivation to get out and run back in Texas today!
Giveaway from CSN starting tomorrow... stay tuned!!!
