When I run outside, I go music-free. I enjoy the silence, unless of course I can indulge in some adult conversation. At the gym, on the treadmill, despite there being TVs, I rarely watch, I usually just go and maybe do some people watching. Again, I will definitely forego the silence if there's some adult conversation to be had. But at home, when I'm stuck in my little room on my hamster wheel, for some reason I have a lot more trouble getting in the zone. I usually put in a movie while I run.
Yesterday, since both girls were stuck home sick, I hit the home treadmill. I put in a movie to watch, looked at the plan, and went for it. I was really pleased when I saw this:
Oh yeah, nothing better than seeing the credits of a movie roll before you finish your run. It was a victorious feeling. Like I conquered the home treadmill, which is admittedly, the hardest place for me to run mentally (and not because of the treadmill factor, because I actually am really attached to the gym treadmill). Something about the house and distractions and zero accountability (you don't want to be the chick at the gym who hops off after 10 minutes). But unbelievably yesterday, both sick girls left me alone for a full 8 miles. No stops to take a 2 year old to potty, no stops because someone was hungry, no doorbells ringing, etc.
Today I had a shorter run planned... 4 miles, and again I decided to run at home. Paige was home but Lily went to school, so when Paige is alone, she's a lot less likely to stay put... so today, my treadmill entertainment was this:
Oh yeah... listen to that for 45 minutes while trying to control your breathing. But it did help that Paige was right next to me. Because she was right there, she was less likely to run in and ask me to "come here" for some catastrophe. So I made it through a couple days stuck home and maintained motivation! Shew!!!
So what do *you* do to keep yourself going while you run? Do you enjoy silence? Are you an iPod fan? Or do you watch NCIS every night (like TMB)?

way to rock the treadmill! And NCIS on the treadmill is totally awesome. But, if I had a DVD player, I admit, I would watch movies too ...
Great job! I watch DVDs on my lap top and I like watching TV series instead of movies. I recently watched all five seasons of "Alias" and now am watching the seasons of "24". :) I am ready to retire the treadmill though for the season and start getting all my runs outside VERY soon!
nice treadmill session, youre a better woman than i am!!! i sold our treadmill recently, but i will still ride the indoor trainer if worse comes to worse. somehow, its not as dreadful as the treadmill to me. but lately ive been watching episodes Spartacus on netflix (make sure the kids are asleep for this show!!!) also been watching episodes of sex in the city. replays of old ironmans are good inspiration when you need that push to get on the treadmill
man, if i had a tm i'd be watching all the shows i never have time to watch! usually though i just go. i can't concentrate on a screen enough to do both running and watching.
Wow! Good for you. I usually have NO patience for treadmill runs, even with good TV or music. I seem to find myself intently staring at the mileage as it ticks up 0.1 mile at a time. All I can think is, "I could hit 'stop,' I could hit 'stop.'"
LOL... I had many a treadmill run to the sights of Dora! (sorry, no sound, I'm plugged in!)
Just tried running at the gym treadmill with MP3 the other night. Only thing I determined is I need to do better at setting up a training playlist. On the bike trainer I prefer watching recorded cycling and triathlon events. This is the prime season for cycling on Versus and if you can get NBC Universal Sports then you're all set for indoor workouts.
great job with the runs! Very impressive!
Way to go on the dreadmill run. I have to have music or I dont go anywhere.
I like the iPod, but I only use it if I'm alone. Which I'm usually not, so...
Nice job! Good call on watching one of Paige's shows. Perhaps I can try that with Keira while I ride, we don't have a treadmill at home. I am like you too and I don't run with music outside, but if I put together a decent playlist, I can get through quite a lot indoors.
I like the ipod but prefer a good show on tv-sometimes oprah or something trashy on bravo or, i will admit it, MTV. but i avoid the treadmill as much as i can!
Outdoors usually no music, treadmill always a movie!
Gotta have the ipod on the treadmill... I have a clever playlist constructed for my long runs- a relaxing song to get warmed up with, the about 6-7 songs with progressively faster beats/more anger to get me up to a solid pace. Then another 6-7 songs of equal speed/rage to encourage me to sprint along like a madwoman! Then the remaining 6-7 songs get progressively slower, with a 2 song burst of pep at the end to make me sprint for the finish!
It is important in my world to trick my brain into staying on the treddy. My legs- they are ok with it. My brain?! Wants Off...
Good run.
I only listen to tunes on the treadmill. If I don't listen to tunes, I watch the news and zone out, playing "running" games on the treadmill to keep from going out of my mind.
On the road, I just love experiencing the outside. So not tunes, just getting in the zone.
i have to watch comedy...it makes time go by so quickly.
I'm def an iPod fan...indoors or out. It is rare, right now, that I even run without music...gotta have it....my Rick Rozay and Jay Z!!!
I like running on the treadmill while watching Biggest Loser! lol Great job on your treadmill runs! :0)
Good for you for getting both runs done! I don't have a treadmill, but if I did I'm sure I'd be watching something ... and yes, that just might include something from Nickelodeon or Disney channel if that means I could get it done!
Winks & Smiles,
Wifey
If I could run outside, yet still have NCIS (or more important Mark Harmon) with me I totally would!!
I always have my iPod on my runs. For my long runs I usually listen to Adam Carolla because he's the best! I adore him, he makes my runs fun! But my short mid-week runs are all about fun music!
If my iPod would stay charged long enough I'd listen to movies, but it seems to die really fast when I do that. :(
