In just over 2 weeks, I'll get on an airplane to fly to San Diego for the Rock n Roll Marathon. On Sunday, June 5th, I will run my second marathon.
I feel ridiculously prepared. Confident. But then some nasty thoughts crept in today... I felt really really prepared for my first marathon, and it all went wrong. But I learned some lessons, right? I definitely learned the nutrition lesson. The other lesson... well, I'm not going to dwell on it, because I'm throwing it out the window. My priorities have changed. I don't just want this:
I want the runner's high. Not just the "I did it!" But the "I gave it everything." I know that puts me at risk for failure... but to be honest, I've spent a lot of hours thinking about it, and I don't care. I'm not afraid of failing. I truly want to go out there and put it all on the line. Everyone who has raced with me knows that come race day, I have an uncontrollable urge to "race", not just run. And I'm not racing anyone but myself... challenging my own capabilities. And sometimes I fail at it, and other times I shine at it. But I absolutely love knowing I had nothing left to give. Come race day on June 5th, I will have three thoughts in my head...
1. "Don't be afraid to give up the good to go for the great." -Prefontaine
2. "Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.” -T.S.Eliot
3. "You've. Freakin. Got. This." -EMZ
With all that said... I need some advice... while I travelled for the Princess Half, I had about a week to acclimate... it was also a half, which is a very different beast to me than a full. I'm worried about things like the time change. Being stuck with restaurant food that isn't my "norm" right before a big race. Things like that. I fly in on Friday for the Sunday race. Any advice you have, please leave a comment!!!

Hmmm - lining up for responses… :D
I am so excited for you!!! You are going to PR big time at this race, mama! Your head and your heart are ready.
You've TOTALLY got this!!
SD is practically my home turf.. I might be able to point you in the right direction for good food, if you're looking for something specific? Our weather in the mornings is almost always cool and overcast. :). It's going to be GREAT.
I'm a San Diego girl too :) Life here is pretty laid back so hopefully you won't feel too stressed! There are a lot of good food options. Maybe ask for your minibar to be cleared and get "your foods" a the store when you arrive. Will you have a car? Maybe you can drive some of the route to be comfortable with it. I haven't been able to dedicate to training for a full yet, but when I do--I want this race to be the first full marathon I do. You'll do great!!!
That's funny - I have the exact opposite goal for San Diego! I started out wanting to have a game plan and a goal in mind. Now, I'm back to my usual goal: enjoy the race and have fun.
Maybe take some bars and stuff you are used to so that you have some of your usual food in your stomach. But I'm sure SD has about every food option you could want.
If you haven't googled it, here's a video of the race course. It TOTALLY helps me to see the course before hand.

You absolutely have this race!!! You are prepared and are going to do awesome!!! Now it is time to just go out there and do your best!
I haven't traveled much like that for races but I would say for you to pack your own food or go to the store when you get there. That way you can have foods that your body is familiar with.
So excited for you!!!
PS: What corral are you in? I'm in 18.
I've voted. I must say, this list is a great way of discovering new running blogs!

Totally normal to have some of that doubt creep in--always happens. But you sound like you've got it all under control.
Pack whatever familiar foods you can; also seek out a Whole Foods or something like it to buy good stuff. Hopefully your room will have a mini-fridge and you can use it to stash stuff.
what an inspirational blog you have :) NEwest follower and can't wait to read more...
I'm waiting for the runner's high and to get some true miles under my belt, my first half will be in February!!
I think you're setting yourself up for a very pleasant revelation ..... you can run faster and harder and you will still enjoy the race! You're going to feel absolutely terrific after this.
I am soooo proud of you Lesley! I can't wait to be there with you and cheer you on to the finish! You are going to rock this race!!!!!!! Two weeks from tomorrow we leave!
Well, I think the time change would work in your favor, right? I mean you are running a bit later than if you had gone east and had to be up at 2am to run! ;)
Food wise, I always keep it bland the night before so that I minimize the chance of having any bad reactions. Sure that garlic sauce might sound good - but is the night before the best time to try it? No. So even at a new place I just pick the safest looking pasta dish I can find.
You're going to be amazing!! I am so excited to hear how it all goes. If they have runner tracking then you can bet I'll be stalking you that day!
I am so excited for you! I am tearing up thinking about it (and my impending First ever half Ironman that I am also doing on June 5th). I love to "race" at races. As pearl Izumi stated in their ad: "Respect the marathon" Give it all you have!
definitely hit a store and get your normal foods...i wouldn't take any chances.
i know that you have this! you are going to do great:)
absolutely great store.. no question your store will hit..
Here is my advice to you about this:
1- The day of the flight put two GUs in a water bottle and SIP it throughout the entire day.
2- When you land go straight to the grocery store and get items like granola, peanut butter a few bananas and whatever you normally eat so that you have it with you.
3- The day before the race run a couple of miles to keep the legs warm from the flight but do it slowly.
4- Sip water with 1 GU throughout the day the day prior
5- Race day -- you know what to do.
I voted! I can't wait to hear about your race - I am so freakin' excited after reading THIS post I can hardly stand it! I feel like I've GOT this because of YOU and I'm not even going to be there - does that even make sense!?
When I run another race away from home, I don't think I will eat out again the night before. It messed up my stomach in Pittsburgh. We packed PB&J but didn't eat them and I wish I would have!
Can't wait to hear more about your adventure!
