But it led into a conversation about "fuel". Stuff you didn't think would be considered endurance fuel. I never thought that taking up running would renew my appreciation for PB&J and gummy bears, but it has.In San Diego, I saw ice pops and twizzlers along the course...
One of my favorite bloggers, Skinnyrunner ran a marathon fueled on Swedish Fish alone.
We also mentioned cookies being popular along the course. I've seen oreos. So other than your typical GUs, shot bloks, and sports beans... what fun and interesting fuels have you seen and/or used during a run?

Really? The thought of eating Oreos while running... ick, ick! Now, afterwards I'd totally be game!
I use Larabars. Dates are a great source of energy and Larabars are just soo yummy! Hungry Runner Girl loves swedish fish as well!
Oh yum Swedish fish!
I've seen fig newtons, oreos, pickle juice, gummy bears, all kinds of Valentines candy at my February 10k, but I never try any because I haven't trained with it.
I haven't seen any of those unique fuels along the courses - maybe I'm running the wrong races lol =)
What the heck?? This is ALL new to me!
At the Eugene Marathon they had bananas at mile 9. I enjoyed that. I stopped and had a half, then continued on my way.
.... I said hello to it again at the finish line, of course!
I am a gummy bear girl! Gu and Chomps upset my stomach. BAD NEWS!!!
Mini Snickers Bar. Insert into mouth and let melt...don't chew it at all just let it melt and the sugar gets into your system along the way.
Yeah, I can't imagine having a lot of that stuff during a run. At the Disney Marathon, there was a huge table of Hershey's Miniatures when you entered Hollywood Studios.
I've heard of cyclists eating boiled potatoes.
mmmmm - now I'm dreaming of swedish fish!
Jolly ranchers are a good one to just suck on. They usually pass them out in Detroit. Also, the Northville Road Runners mans and M&Ms station around mile 20ish with M&Ms. I took a swedish fish from a girl at that race too. It wasn't nearly as good as I thought it would be, but I was already fairly distressed at the time. Those were my go to food when I would drive weekly between Detroit and Toronto to make it through the drive awake, and the canadian ones contained real sugar, no corn syrup (at the time, anyway)!
Cristina puked off an on during bike ride after I gave her some Haribo gummy frogs before a ride. They worked fine for me, and might have been her preride frappucino that did her in. Yuck!
I was tempted to grab some cola during my recent 70.3, but I had already overgued, and just needed water.
Wow, I need to travel to more races! Here in MN, we have gels and Gatorade at aid stations for longer races. I've been to races that served gummi bears, banana and orange slices, and Luna chews at aid stations.
Trail races and ultras seem to have the coolest fuel. One aid station along my recent trail half was also an aid station for the two ultra events that day, and there was all kinds of awesome food. I just grabbed a handful of trail mix. Now of course I'm blanking on the other goodies they had available during the race. :( I want to say they had sandwiches and EVERYTHING.
PB & J is my fave pre-run breakfast!
I always think cookies and candy would be AMAZING on a run, but when I have the opportunity they are the last thing I want. I stick with gels or fresh fruit as a treat! Oranges and watermelon... mmm!
my stomach turns at some of the things people are able to eat while they're running. What got me through the one marathon I ran was a volunteer handing out salted mini-pretzels. Turned out I really needed that sodium.
Pittsburgh had pretzels, oranges and bananas. The oranges were heaven! Someone also offered me a hot dog and fries. I politely declines!
I actually have come to prefer things like gummy bears and welch's fruit snacks over the GU gels simply because they are so much cheaper! Lately on my bike rides, I have been fueling with fig newtons and uncrustables (the frozen PBJs).
I love gummy bears!! I need to be in a race that gives those out!! :-)
