Don't Click that Link!

So, I'm doing a little research on nutrition, and I see this:
Cool, the Tetons... my husband's favorite place in the world.  Let's click.

You might not be able to see the details... but let's just say I pointed out the 50-miler... the fact that there is 4,975 ft of elevation PER 25 mile loop, and that the course includes steep climbs and loose rocks.

OK, time to face reality:

1.  I have never run a trail race.  I've only even run on a trail at all once, and it was flat, and I only went 6 miles, and I tripped 3 times in that 6 miles.

2.  I hate hills.  I hate them.  I'm not good at them, they are not my friend.  I was destined to live in a city of flat races.  Pretty sure that 4975 ft of elevation per 25 mile loop with steep climbs qualifies as "hills".  A lot of hills.  A lot of BIG hills.

3.  I'm a zombie after 26.2 miles.  This is double that on ridiculous terrain at high elevation with lots of steep hills.

And look at these folks at the start:
These dudes look serious.  They know what they are doing.  Can we say "sore thumb"?  Yeah, that's what I would be.

Sure, the course looks pretty...

But pretty sure by mile 10, I'd be hoping to be eaten by a caribou...
Does he look hungry?  I'm pretty sure it'd be clear that I was easy prey.

See this guy?
He was only 26 years old when he started.

I'm fairly certain the *only* welcome sight on the course would be this one:
The finish line.

So why o' why did I click that link?  And why is something that seems so incredibly unfathomable and impossible seem so oddly attractive?  So who's in with me?  Labor Day weekend 2013?  Plenty of time to prepare, right????????  2 years!  Yes, insanity has struck.

Ok Leslie... if you come out to run this, I will totally do it with you. I live just a half hour or so from the start. How much fun would we have?? Do it!! 2013. I am totally in with you. :)

WOW! I understand the temptation - but… Wow -- I don't know. I know you can do it and I will even say that it would probably be at least mile 15 before wishing to be eaten by a caribou but still!! What a challenge!

I think it's fun to have something like this to shoot for, no matter how unrealistic it might seem right now. A year and a half ago, a 5k seemed like it was impossible, and a half marathon seemed insane. But I did them both anyway. Now I have the Badwater Ultra map on my office wall. Seems way beyond insane. But, hey, you never know. I say go for it.

Lesley, my dear friend, you've LOST YOUR MARBLES!!

You completely cracked me up when you said Old Man Time there started the race when he was 26! ;)

I"m going to the Tetons in a couple of weeks and pretty sure after checking it out, I'll be back to say yes. I really want to do an ultra around 2013, so this could be perfect!!

Just noticed I didn't put a link to the actual race site in the post... http://www.dreamchaserevents.com/Races/Grand-Teton-Races

You've got a couple of takers to join you, I say let the training begin and make that dream a reality.

2yrs IS plenty of time to prepare. However, your captions to the photo of the caribou and the old guy show you have indeed lost your mind. By the way, those aren't hills there .... those are mountains!

That is INSANE... but I love it. I say go for it! You might meet that old dude, he looks like he'd be a hoot.

Now that is my type of race! I should not have clicked the link to your post when it said clearly not click it! 2013...maybe I can do some trip from SA then... You really have me thinking here. What is the exact date? I'll pencil it in for now.

Lesley @ racingitoff.com said...

Johann - It's the Saturday of Labor Day weekend. Not sure the exact date for that in 2013. :-). That would be quite a trip for you!

I think 2013 is the year of the absurd.

I am involved in doing the American Triple T which is 4 triathlons in 3 days.

I am looking at Leadman 250 and now this.

I say WTFN (Why The F Not?) and go for it.

It would be fun and it would certainly keep us entertained.

That caption of the dude that started at 26 years old was hilarious.

Wow, that looks amazing. I am totally interested!!!

I would totally go... to cheer you on!

Hopefully the scenery is so beautiful it distracts you from the fact that it really is 50 miles? Or maybe they hire bears and caribou to chase you?

Thanks for the heads up. I've been pretty much non-blogger of lately...too much life going on right now and my stupid smart phone doesn't deal with blogger or googler reader very well.

I love this post. Right now that run sounds like an 11, 12, 13 hours vacation from my daily worries! I say, Do it!!

Like my mom says, "Why do when you can overdo?" :)

P.S. Just imagine Mr. E is chasing you up the mountains yelling at you whilst wildly waving a drumstick in the air!

P.P.S. Jeremy says you should prepare for your fete to be bloody stumps and to buy THE most expensive trail running shoes you can find. LOL

(I just realized you have a couple of Christina's commenting and thought I should clarify this Christina Bartz :) )
