Mid-year Check-in!

Well, we're halfway through the year which means it's time to check-in with the 2011 goals.  Since I haven't looked at them since I posted them, this should be interesting...

Health:
Cut processed sugar. - Epic fail.  I love sugar.
Reduce fast food to no more than once per week. - I think I've done this with a couple rare exceptions.
Lose 15 18 lbs. - I've lost about 13-16 lbs so far (depending on when I weigh myself)... I took a brief break post-marathon and let myself plateau... I'll be back on track for the rest very soon!

Knowledge:
Complete RRCA Coaching Certification. - DONE!!!

Fitness:
Run at least 12 races. (Run for the Bling of It!!! Challenge) - Done! Hit 12 at RnR San Diego Marathon!
Run at least 2 races of each type (5k, 10k, 15k, Half, and Marathon). - So far I've done 1 of each distance except the Half, which I've done 7 of so far this year!  My second 10k is this Saturday.
Stay injury-free. - Done so far... minus the one week off for a sprained foot that was not caused by running.
Incorporate weekly speedwork. - Um, fail so far.  I have done some, but very inconsistent.  I've signed on Adam to help me stay on track with speedwork for the rest of the year.
Incorporate weekly cross-training and/or strengthening. - Fail... sure I've gone to Bodyworks class 10 out of 26 weeks... that hardly counts as consistent.  I'm starting on Insanity next week though with the help of Heather.
2011km (1250 miles) - Halfway through the year, and I'm at 801 miles.  I'm going for quality over quantity this year, and I'm happy to report those miles were in line with my plan and other goals and none were "junk" miles just to amp up my mileage number (something I felt like I did last year to hit 1000 for the first time).  Last year at this point, I was at 442 miles and hit 1083 for the year... so obviously I'm doing a bit more this year, and I'd say that is solely due to consistency.  I've been very very consistent with my training this year.  Go me!

Time Goals:
5k - sub-26 - My goal 5k got iced out.  So the only 5k I ran was pacing a friend for her first 5k.
10k - 1:00 - Done 1/8/11 59:35... but I think I have a little more in me.
15K - 1:30 - Not yet, 1:33:33 currently.
Half Marathon - 2:05 - A stretch still... current PR 2:09:17
Full Marathon - 4:30 - EEk... oops... hmmmm... current PR 4:47:54.

That's it for now... more great things to come in the next 6 months, I know it!

CEP Compression Shorts Review (and Giveaway!!!)

You know that I am a huge fan of the CEP Compression Socks.  In my opinion, they are the best compression socks out there.  I am convinced that they speed up recovery after a hard effort... and although I don't think they improve my performance during my run, I've experienced a lot less post-race soreness since I've been wearing them.  The only downfall for me is that they aren't air conditioned, and I admittedly do have trouble wearing them in the 100+ degree Texas summer.  I try to wear as little as possible (without looking like I work on the corner of 14th Street) while running during the summer heat.

So you can imagine how excited I was to be able to review the CEP Compression Shorts... especially because the major issues I had during my last marathon were with my quads.  They seem to get a little temperamental when I torture them with hours upon hours of running... go figure.  I used the shorts for recovery post-marathon.  Just like the socks, there's definitely a technique to getting them on... I'll let you know when I figure it out.  But I did eventually worm my way into them like the wicked step-sister trying to fit into Cinderella's shoe.  I'd post a photo of myself in just the shorts, but I care about my readers too much.  Can we just say compression + me = more muffin tops than a bakery on a Saturday morning?  Ok then, we'll leave it at that.  In all seriousness, though, once they were on, they were definitely compressive, but not uncomfortably so.  I wore them for several hours each day for the couple of days following my marathon.  I sincerely think they aided in recovery.  My upper-legs were the most torn up by the Rock n Roll San Diego course... particularly my IT Bands and hamstrings, but also my quads.  I can't say with 100% certainty if they sped up my improvement (especially since I did also have an appointment with my sports doc for A.R.T.) but they certainly made me feel more comfortable trapsing up and down the stairs post-marathon. Within 5 days post-marathon, I felt completely back to normal.  Completely.  It was almost odd considering that I felt sub-par for almost a month following my last marathon.

I also tried these out on a run... they are perfect under a Nuu-Muu.  And similar to the socks... they take a little getting used to, but I did notice that I had almost no soreness post run in the usual achy areas.  It's hard to pinpoint exactly how much recovery and lack-of-soreness is due to compression-wear... but I *am* convinced that CEP is the best brand for compression gear in the market.  And I can also say that after I started wearing compression gear, I have noticed a lot less soreness and a lot quicker recovery times (although other factors could contribute to this as well).

Running Buddy Appreciation!

Amanda of 5 Miles Past Empty designated June 25th as Running Buddy Appreciation Day (to coincide with her return to the Pacific Northwest for the Seattle Rock 'n' Roll Marathon)!!!  As most of  you know, I am a buddy runner.  Running is so, so, so much better with buddies to share it with.  Whether they just carpool with you to the race, spend hours with you on the tread, run with you in races, or hit the lake with you on Saturdays.  Fortunate for me, I have a lot of amazing running buddies... but unfortunately, that makes me scared to death that I'm going to forget someone!

Elaine and I met at Big D Half Marathon in April 2010 (it seems like I've known her so much longer).  She is also a raceaholic!  She has shared rides with me a million times to the race start, and nothing makes me happier than to watch her cross the finish line.  I had a cryfest breakdown when she crossed the finish line at White Rock Marathon (our first) this past December.

Emily and I met when our kiddos ended up in the same kindergarten class this past August.  Since then, we have literally run hundreds of miles together on the treadmill, occassionally outdoors, and we've gotten to go to a few races together as well.  Emily puts up with me and my running jabber more than anyone else, and I love her for it!  She also completely surprised me at my New Years Day Half Marathon by showing up in the bitter cold to cheer me on (with very blingy signs).

No race buddy appreciation would be complete with mention of EW and his wife Dana. EW is present at almost every race I attend. He is always a smiling face at the start, and I have spent many race miles at his side. He made me laugh all the way through one hilly half marathon to the point that I didn't even notice the hills. Always great to see him and Dana at the local events.

Robin D has been an amazing run and race buddy.  We've run many many long runs together at the lake (despite the fact that she could lap me if she wanted to).  She has cheered me through the finish at several races, given me rides to the start line, and given the ultimate sacrifice TWICE to pace me... for my first marathon and then for my half marathon PR attempt (where she pulled me through a shocking 6 minute PR).

Sherry is my race twin.  OK, so not twin, since she's petite and I am, well, not.  We actually met through this blog, and finally met in person in September of last year.  We ran together for her first half marathon (it was my 5th).  Our paces were perfect for one another!  Racing match made in heaven.  We've now run 4 half marathons together plus she was my travel buddy for my recent trip to San Diego for the marathon.

I also want to thank Robin W and Libby who I have started to share more miles with the last few weeks, and hope that continues.  Also thank you to Ashley who has let me bend her ear during many hours on the gym treadmill, and faithfully checks on me after big races.  And to new running buddies who I hope to run with more - Mary, Holly, Denya, and Heather.  And, ahem, to a running buddy who frankly better get that hip healed because I'm tired of her sitting on the sidelines - Jenn.  And of course my little "dangling carrot" 5k pacer, my nephew Julian

And tomorrow, I get to run with Amie, who ran many many miles with me when I was training for my first half marathon back in 2009.  Not long after she got injured... and then right about when she healed up, she got pregnant.  It'll be the first time we've run together in about a year.  Excited!

Lastly, I added new run buddy today - my son, Patrick, who is starting training for his first 5k.  Patrick got in his first mile since February today.  And he plans on running the next 2 days with me after I get home from my run as well.  Woo-hoo!

SYTO 5k Recap

This weekend was the Sweat Your Thorns Off Virtual 5k, hosted by Adam of The Exciting Boring Runner.
I'm going to do this "race" recap by the numbers... since I didn't really run it as just a 5k.

0345 - Hour I woke up to get dressed and drive to run #1 with friends

7 - The number of friends that were there - Libby, Robin W, Shannon, Fiona, Marcie, Dana, and Amanda.

10 billion - The number of hills in that run.

12.65 - Number of miles I ran.

80 - Degrees at the start of the run.

900% - The humidity.

0830 - Time I arrived at run #2.

2 - Number of people I ran with for this run - Heather and her dad.

0 - The number of times I have been on a trail before.

1 - How many people dropped their pants to go potty.  Hint:  It wasn't me.

2 - Snakes we encountered...

6.01 - Miles spent on the trail.

3 - Times I tripped (but never went all the way down).

1 - Large 3 ft dead bird dangling over the creek (I think tangled in fishing wire).

85 - The temperature at the end of the run.

7 - The number of water bottles I emptied.

2 - Number of shirts I sweat through.

18.66 - Total miles for Saturday's running.

6 - Number of 5ks I completed.

In summary - I sweat... A LOT... I drank 7 full water bottles and still weighed 2 lbs less when I got home... but I don't know if my thorns came off... because when I got home... I noticed my shoelaces were stuck together with, well "thorns"...  and on my socks... more "thorns".  (And FYI, no, I don't have really hairy legs... that's dirt... a lot of it... the trail wasn't that bad, not sure how I got quite that dirty... my socks were nasty.)

On a side note, though, I never thought I would spend a day running 18.66 miles "just because".  I only had a loose "9" written on my schedule.  I paid for it, though, by being utterly exhausted the rest of the day Saturday.  My legs, however, feel perfectly fine.  Wasn't sore at all.

Ruu-Muu Review and a Coupon!

In October of last year I reviewed the Nuu-Muu.  I absolutely love this running dress because you can wear your own sports bra and whatever shorts or capris or whatever underneath it.  It's super comfy, super soft fabric, and just really cute.  I get tons of compliments when I wear my Nuu-Muu

Buuuuuut... to quote from my review back in October... "If I had one thing I would change, I might suggest adding a small pocket or two (probably in the center of the back) where you could put a GU packet or two."  Well, wouldn't you know it, I immediately got an e-mail from Enid of Nuu-Muu telling me they already had plans in the works for a "Ruu-Muu" which would have - you guessed it - two pockets on the back center.  Exactly what I said was missing.

Well not too long ago, the Ruu-Muu was finally revealed, and I had the pleasure of trying one out from the first batch.  Once again, I was in love with the softness of the fabric and the option to wear whatever I wanted underneath.  In this case, I went for the sports bra and compression shorts (note that you could even use this in the winter to put over some tights and a long sleeve shirt).

I tried to take a good photo of the pocket in the back, but it's hard to see with the pattern.  There are two pockets and they are pretty sizeable.  I easily fit 4 GUs in each pocket (yeah, I doubt you'd really want to run with 8 GUs on your back, but you never know).  There is also a flap at the top of the pocket to keep things from flying out, yet making it relatively quick and easy to fetch some fuel from your back without trying to mess with some sort of zipper.

And I know I mentioned this last time I reviewed them, but I love their sizing... they come in (S)assy, (M)arvelous, (L)ovely, and (XL)ent.

I have never worn a Nuu-Muu and not gotten a compliment or had someone ask where I got it.  They really are uber-cute, super comfy, and perfect for all seasons.  It's a great way to get the skirt/dress look, but still be able to wear your shorts or capris or even full-length tights underneath.

Unfortunately for me, it's time for me to size down.  Shucks... so I'm going to have to start anew on my Nuu-Muu collection.  But lucky for me and for all my readers, Nuu-Muu has generously offered us $10 off a Nuu-Muu (or Ruu-Muu).  Use code RacingItOff10 .   Woo-hoo.  So go treat yourself to one to perk up your summer runs!

Note:  The Ruu-Muu was provided to me to review.  I did not receive any further compensation and was not obligated to provide a positive review... my love for the Nuu-Muu brand is all my own!

Turn it ON, Turn it OFF

I thrive on a training plan.  I usually write out my plan for the entire year (including daily mileage) sometime in December.  I admittedly make some adjustments throughout the year, but I stay pretty on path.  When I have miles on the plan, I'm pretty good about sticking to them.  Without a plan, I tend to flounder.  I tend to lose motivation.  Excuses are easier to come by.

Regardless, I decided to turn the training plan OFF for a few weeks after San Diego - for both the mental and physical break.  Being the planner I am, I still have miles written down as a "wish" plan, but I'm not holding myself to it.  My AC went out Monday, so I didn't run.  Tuesday... well, it just didn't happen then either.  I know I'll run Thursday because I'm meeting up with a friend, but I really wanted some miles today...  I wanted that feeling... that "accomplished" feeling.  I didn't have a lot of time, so I bought my confidence back by pushing myself on the treadmill... I only did 3 miles, but I pushed away from my normal 11 min/mile training run and went for 9:50 min/mile.  Sure, I can run that fast in a race, no problem... but I have a lot of trouble keeping that pace in training, especially at home and on the treadmill, where I always feel a little heavier.  Now I'm ready to attack tomorrow when I hit the pavement with Robin W.

I'm excited that although I'm allowing myself to stay "off plan" for the next 4 weeks, that I've made plans to run with friends at least twice a week (Tuesday and Thursday) before the rooster crows.  It will surely keep me moving.  I'm a social runner, so I rarely turn down the opportunity to run with friends... so this time I went begging to find the friend support I need to get through the summer (which is always a tough time for me because my "normal" workout routine no longer works)... and I found it.  Yeah!!!  So yeah, even when I don't have a plan, I still have a plan.  Sad, I know... it's the engineer in me.

A Salad as Big as...

I love salads.  The thought of throwing whatever I can find in my fridge and pantry into a bowl (super easy) and somehow coming out with something healthy and delicious makes me happy.  But that wasn't always the case...

Do you remember what salad used to mean?  In the old days, the only salad I knew was this one:
Iceberg lettuce (maybe add in some lunchmeat and shredded cheese with that) and drown it in ranch.  Not a little, but enough that the leaves actually need swimming lessons.  All the while telling myself that salad is good for me.

Now while some restaurants do provide some decent salad selections... most restaurants... well... Beware!!!  My past favorites were Chili's Quesadilla Explosion Salad (1400 calories) and Houlihan's Fire Grilled BBQ Salmon Salad (1182 calories).  Sure, you can cut some of these down by asking for no cheese or replacing creamy dressings with salsa or a vinagrette, having any tortilla strips or croutons removed... and a number of other things... although, I'd argue that the salad almost becomes something totally different at that point and probably no longer worth the price you're paying.  And then I have the opposite problem at other places... like Chick-fil-a... I love their Chargrilled and Fruit salad... but even with my favorite berry balsamic dressing, it's under 300 calories... which might work for some, but I'm usually starving before I get home.

The point here is I want a salad that's big enough to fill me up without being over-the-top on calories.  I mean, it's a salad... if I want 1400 calories, it had better be a giant cookie with ice cream and caramel over the top.  My ideal salad is 500-800 calories - because I usually have a pretty small breakfast, and I usually eat lunch pretty early so it's kind of my post-workout meal most of the time.  Give me the giant-sized salad in a mixing bowl, any day...  can you see my excitement???

So here are my helpful hints for making a salad as big as your butt Texas without overloading on calories...
- Fill your bowl with greens first (I am a spinach addict, but I also love red leaf lettuce)... almost to the brim... and then top on other veggies... I like lots of carrots (I use a peeler to thinly slice them into the salad), red bell peppers, sometimes raw broccoli, occassionally raw zucchini, tomatoes, etc.  I try to be to the rim of my bowl (unless I have a ginormous bowl like on the right) with the veggies.  Veggies are so low in calorie that this is a great way to create the filling part of the salad.
- Now that your bowl is pretty much full, then add the special toppings that make it yummylicious... since the bowl is already to the top, you'll be less tempted to overflow on these much higher calorie options.  For me, the must haves are Craisons (which I make sure to measure out) and grilled chicken (although if I have leftover fish or steak, I use this instead - keeping to a serving or less).  If I want some crunchy (which I usually do), I like to use some granola instead of croutons or tortilla strips.  If I want some cheese, I'll actually use the laughing cow cheese and try to "chop" it up a little and spread it out a bit.  Not easy, but I like it as a lower-calorie way to get some creaminess.
- Pick some light oil or vinagrette instead of a creamy dressing.  I am a huge fan of Walnut Raspberry Vinagrette.  (There's nothing wrong with creamy dressings on occassion and in moderation, though.)
- And mix your salad up... it'll make less dressing go a lot further.  Nothing worse than having a yummy salad on top and just a bunch of dry lettuce on the bottom.

Basically, the bottom line is that you don't need to overdo the good stuff to get the flavor!!!

Other things I occassionally add - all sorts of fruit - kiwi, apples, strawberries, grapes, blackberries, blueberries, etc.

So I bet you are all just itching to whip out a salad right now, right???  Well how about some inspiration from some of your favorite bloggers???

TMB, who I happen to know is a big fan of the "family sized" salad and does not share, shared a few of her favorite combos:
- Edamame, Blue Cheese, Strawberries, and Cinnamon Almonds (um, yum!)
- Cucumbers, Carrots, Edamame, Cottage Cheese, and Sunflower Seeds
- Feta, Pasta, Cucumbers, Green Peppers, and Croutons
- Black Beans, Tortilla Chips, Salsa, Cheddar, Quorn (meat substitute), and Avocado (another yum, although I'd replace that Quorn with Chicken!)

Everyone's favorite ninja-runner, Blonde Ponytail, is also a big fan of the salad.  She broke her favorite ingredients into categories:
- Greens: Mixed greens and Spinach
- Protein: Chicken, Tuna or Salmon
- Nuts: Sliced Almonds, Sunflower seeds, Walnuts
- Fat: AVOCADO mmmmm. (yes, I totally agree... avocado makes everything better)
- Crunchy toppers: Snap Peas, Carrots, Broccoli (Everytime I see a salad on her blog it has snap peas...)
- Sweetness: Dried Cranberries, Sliced Pears, and Granny Smith Apples
- Summer fav: STRAWBERRIES

I asked my favorite race buddy, Sherry what she liked on a salad... and she said "What's a salad?"  (OK, she didn't say that, but the girl wouldn't touch a salad unless the base was twizzlers and the toppings were starburst and peanut M&Ms.)  Love ya, Sherry!

Tricia of Endurance Isn't Only Physical had a great idea to replace the often calorie-ridden dressing with lemon juice, salt, and pepper.  Love this idea!  Her favorite toppings?  Black or green olives, pickled okra, feta cheese, sunflower seeds along with the typical lettuce, spinach, tomato, cucumber, and carrots.

And a couple of my favorite bloggers even gave me their take on a restaurant salad...

Katie of Keeping Up With Katie  loves to recreate Panera's cobb salad (hello yumminess).  She tops a bed of lettuce with chopped onions, green peppers, a hard boiled egg, goat cheese, crumbled turkey bacon, and then drizzles it with BBQ sauce (never thought about using BBQ sauce as dressing).

And remember how earlier I said that Chili's Quesadilla Explosion was one of my favorite salads before I realized that I could eat a cheeseburger for less calories?  The salad is yummylicious... well, the famous Skinnyrunner sent me her take on how to make this salad at home without it being such a "calorie bomb" (she noted that it also has 89 grams of fat in that 1400 calories).  I think I may hear angels singing.  Is it true?  Can I eat this and still wear the same pants the next day???  Tell me it's true.

So Skinnyrunner's version of this Southwestern salad - Start with a bed of lettuce and top with a grilled chicken breast (you can substitute with black beans, although I'd probably go for both)... add some corn, some diced tomatoes (you could use chunky salsa if you are short on time).  The she tosses in some onion, cilantro, black olives (ok, I'd skip these because I'm anti-olive), avocado (yes, everything is better with avocado), and any other vegetables you like.  She usually puts cucumbers, shredded carrots and pickles (yes, she puts pickles on almost every salad... hey, aren't pickles supposed to help with cramping?  maybe that's why she's so fast).  If you want the crunch, she suggests spraying some corn tortillas with pam, cutting into wedges, and sticking them in the oven until crispy (I do this often!).  If  you want, you can add cheese... and then chipotle ranch or ranch mixed with BBQ sauce (never thought of this either) and serve the dressing on the side so that you can control the quantity.  Y-U-M.

I make salads a lot because I belong to a veggie co-op, and this is an easy way for me to make use of many of the veggies and fruits before they go bad in the fridge... it's also a great way to use up the extra chicken breast from the night before, etc.

So you should have ideas racing through your head now... what do *you* like on your salad???  Any tips on keeping them reasonable, calorie-wise?

Flashback Fotos...

Yes, I know I can't spell "fotos", but nothing catchy was coming up... so that's what ya get!  Anyhow, ye ol' computer got attacked when I uploaded all those triathlon photos yesterday.  I'm sure it was like breaking a mirror... the computer just couldn't handle processing something so awkward and goofy.  So I was D-O-N-E with the ol' computational device after getting those pics up and loaded onto the blog (before I happily deleted them all from my hard drive before it decided to explode due to accidentally clicking on the wrong one).  Anyhow, so I missed my fun task of scanning in some great flashback photos of my father on Father's Day...  Sadly, I had searched through every photo I own, and I only found 10 photos of my father and I together.  Somewhat due to the fact that my father is an amazing photographer, and therefore often the one behind the camera... a trait I inherited (oh no, not the awesome photographer part... just the "usually-the-one-behind-the-camera" bit... I'm actually a terrible photographer...).

So without further ado... here are the 10 flashback photos that I scanned in of me and my dad for your amusement (and trust me, some of them are amusing)...

(Oh come on, please tell me I wasn't the only one that forced my family to take one of these old-time photos at the mall kiosk???  My dad and brother humored me and even waited 30 minutes extra because I insisted on wearing *that* dress and it was a million sizes too big, so they had to pin it on me.)

Yes, indeed, our shirts say "Merry Texmas"... pretty sure we thought they were snazzy at the time.  Check out bro's hair... dude, that thing would cause major wind resistence on the bike these days.

This one was at Marine Corps OCS graduation.  Thinnest I ever was... right there... daddy was proud!

The day he gave me away (and refused to take me back... bwahahahahaha)...

I have zero photos of us together in the 9 years since my wedding... I think we really are always behind the camera... one of us or the other... unless it's a huge group photo... but none of just us... must correct that.  All the recent pictures are of "grandpa"... no longer of "dad".  Hmmmmm... Those kids just take over, don't they???

Happy Father's Day (yes, one day late, because I want to be unique), Dad!
(Now let's correct the "lack of photo" issue...)

I Need a Tattoo...

I would like to dedicate this post to Jason... cause I went through this traumatic event for his appreciation.

Yesterday morning, I went for an awesome 14 mile run at recovery pace (I never thought "recovery" and "14 miles" would be used in the same sentence).  It was a lot of fun sharing the miles with friends - including Libby, Robin W, and Shannon.  And we had some unexpected attendees - a couple of armadillos, a snake, and a few rabbits.

But then in the early evening hours, I made the crazy decision to take on something I had never done before.  Something that I'm certain, just days earlier, I had told Jason I would *never* do.  But I did it... I attempted a triathlon.  And for the record... my brother made me do it!  (OK, OK, I volunteered to make a complete and utter fool of myself.)

I went in with this much training:

I waited for the optimal race weather:

I took in completely inappropriate pre-race nutrition:

I put on the classiest tri-suit I could find and checked out the equipment and set up my transition area:

I sized up the competition:

My "I-wanna-go-to-Kona" nephew, Julian.

Little dude nephew, Connor.

My son, Patrick

Then I went for it... first, my most feared event... the swim... sharks attacking from all sides...

(Please note my brother's amusement at spraying water on me... and the fact that *I* am doing this at *his* children's party instead of *him*.)

Ouch on the knees... but time to get out of this water!!!  (I was the only contestant not appropriate attired.)

Time to head to T1...

Kinda shocked my brother didn't turn the hose on me.

My brother has always encouraged me to take up cycling... there, I did it... on an 18" bike... mind you, I'm 5'11" and most of that is legs.

Please notice the cheater in yellow... he is not on wheels.  Normally this would be a disadvantage during the "bike" portion... but in this case, trust me, it was an advantage.  And I need to work on my flexibility if I'm going to continue cycling in this manner.

As I headed into T2, my younger nephew was blocking the path.  My compassionate brother yelled "GET OUT OF THE WAY... she's a runner, not a biker, she'll run right over you."  Probably wise words... as I was headed right for him with very little control.  My T2 time was sweet... less than 3 seconds... And check out my choice of minimalist run shoes...

Now... please note my cheating nephew, who is easily 10 ft ahead of me after running the "bike" route, yells to me "Go ahead, try and beat me."  Now, if you've been reading here for awhile, you might know that I have run with my nephew before.  He's fast.  Faster than me... not by a ton, but most definitely faster... and uh, he has a head start.  So unfair... but I can't let him just whip me without even trying.  So I start to go for it...

Can you see our expressions?  Mine is of pain, his is of "Ha ha ha, watch this!!!"  Is that how it's going to be Julian... fine, I'll have to bring out the big weapons... that's right... the ginormous femurs... check out that stride!  Take *THAT* shorty!

But alas, I still couldn't catch him... looks like a tie, but pretty sure he beat me by a few inches... that stinker!  I can't ever seem to come out in front of him.

And I even scored some bling:

Although, I was disappointed there were no aid stations along the route... really, Chris???  ;-)

Fun times and friendly competition was had by all.  (For the record, this was a Summer Party for my Triathlete Nephews - age 4 and 9... *AND* these pictures are of my second attempt because the photos of the first attempt were blurry... I think someone did that on purpose... the things I sacrifice for this blog!!!)

I did it!  I'm a triathlete... do you think it's time for the tattoo???
